The two earliest sources for the Book of Genesis were anonymous authors now known as the Yahwist and the Elohist. This is because the Yahwist called his God by the name Yahweh. while the Elohist used the name Elohim.'Elohim' is the plural of 'El' (a god) and is used in Genesis for more than one god. When used in a singular context, or with a singular verb, 'Elohim' was used by the Elohist to refer to his God. Leonard Kass points out that in the story of Jacob, it is often hard fo modern scholars to discern whether Jacob is talking of the Egyptian gods, in the plural, or of his one God.For more information, please see: http://christianity.answers.com/bible/the-book-of-genesis
If you believed in Him as the same God as in Genesis, "In the beginning God created.."(Hebrew word for God is Elohim which is a masculine plural noun) you would have your answer.
To be able to understand "Let us " in the Book of Genesis .it is important to know that God first created His Son as confirmed in John 3: 13 ; 6: 38, 62; ssians8: 23, 42, 58 that talks about Jesus' prehuman existence. Colossians 1: 15 reads. " He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; because by means of him all other things were created in the heavens and on the earth, the things visible and the things invisible etc... So when Jehovah God says " Let us " in Genesis 1, He was speaking to His Son Jesus, who was later sent on earth, to redeem the human race from the curse of sin and death and to undo the damage caused by Satan. Read John 3: 16; 1 John 3: 8. So to answer your question. God was not refering to Himself in the Book of Genesis but he was speaking to His Son that Colossians 1: 15 confirmes as the firstborn of all creation. The Bible refers to Jesus as God's "only begotten Son" because Jesus alone was directly created by Jehovah God. Read John 3: 16. Jesus worked closely with his Father Jehovah, helping Him to create all other things. Proverbs 8: 30 reads. " Then I was beside him as a master worker. I was the one he was especially fond of day by day; I rejoiced before him all the time; " Revelation 3. 14 describes Jesus as the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation by God.
