The cottage industry
Victorian shops were often small and specialized, reflecting the growing consumer culture of the time. They typically featured ornate shopfronts with large windows displaying goods, aiming to attract passersby. Inside, shops were often cramped, filled with a variety of products, from textiles to groceries, and were staffed by knowledgeable shopkeepers who provided personalized service. The shopping experience was enhanced by the rise of department stores towards the end of the Victorian era, which offered a wider range of goods under one roof.
Manufactured goods cost less in return to the handmade goods which took longer and wasnt as high of quality Fewer good were made by hand.
Apart from food shops of various kinds, very few shops had readymade goods. For example, there were no off-the-peg clothes or footwear. Most things had to be made to order, which meant that most goods were relatively expensive. This was standard throughout Europe till perhaps the 1820s ...
It was where people bought and sold their foodstuffs and goods. It was therefore also a social meeting place, and in Athens there were perfume shops for the men where they gathered to gossip.
