Significance of the Flag's stripesAccording to a Congress resolution in 1777: White represents Purity and Innocence. Red represents Hardiness and Valor. The thirteen stripes represent the original 13 colonies. (Blue represents Vigilance, Perserverence and Justice.)

The flag flown today is patterned, colored and proportioned according to 1912 government specifications, with a white star for each state. The original version had 13 stars - 1 for each of the original colonies.

The red and white stripes on the American flag represent the first 13 Colonies which became the first 13 states. The colors red and white date back to an early flag of the American Colonies - The "Continental Colors." It started with a red flag was known as the British Red Ensign, or "Queen Anne's Colours" and it had the King's Union Jack in the upper left corner. To arrive at a flag for the British Colonial Americas someone sewed 6 white stripes on the British Red Ensign giving it 7 red stripes for a total of 13 stripes. This striped flag became known as the "Continental Colors."
