'Alienation' and 'racism' prevails the whole poem. With blues music, the black musician narrates his 'blue' situation in the white society. 'rickety stool' is symbolicly used to show what white society sees deserved for the blacks. They are alienated. White people that came here to listen the pianist only take his musical ability, they do not take his state of mind he tells in the song. The tone in the poem is also sad.
