The vikings had something called a bearded axe, was an interesting piece of technology for the time. Wide blade, but small axe overall, used less steel. Also, the edge would be tempered, but the body of the axe would not, so the axe was slightly flexible and able to handle shocks without shattering, while the blade was rock hard and held an edge.

All the Northern cultures had apt metalworking technology. Swedes in particular (my opinion) made some of the best wrought-iron, though Other cultures of the time had more skills with pattern-welded blades, and setting steel edges into softer iron blades.

Unlike what modern culture assumes about weapons in the pre-firearm eras, shields were the single most important bit of battlefield equipment. They were not used to bash the enemy with or any of the silly crap you see on the "History" channel or other pop-culture media. They were the defensive element than allowed the weapon to be used without making every fight a one-swing double kill. Far more common than a sword, or even an axe was the spear. Without a shield, a swordsman was basically a doomed piece of meat.
