The world's most heavily militarized border is the border between South and North Korea. A buffer zone of 4 km (2.5 mi) exists between the two states (called the Demilitarized Zone or DMZ), while on both sides of the DMZ almost 1 million troops are stationed (more than 700.000 on the Norther side, the rest on the Southern side), including US and UN personell (on the Southern side). Moreso, technically, the two states are at war with each other for more than 50 years (although an armistice is in place since 1953). There is currently no open crossing between South and North Korea, the border being totally closed.
