Transition is the logical, rational flow of ideas from one subject to the next. If an essay transitions well, the reader will have a good feel for the direction in which the paper is "headed" so to speak. A good essay is one in which each section relates naturally and clearly to the next, forming a solid train of thought through which the writer is able to clearly and effectively communicate his/her ideas on the subject. Without good transition, the reader may be left feeling confused by what he/she has just read, as the various points of the paper do not seem to relate to one another to form a cohesive body of work.
