Many Americans were concerned that the Great Depression had occurred. They had been led to believe that the economy was in good shape. Hoover had even proclaimed that the end of poverty in the United States was near at hand. The 1920s was a period of materialist pleasure. Business seemed to be booming, cars and radios provided mobility and entertainment. Women were advancing in ways they had not previously. There were no major wars or conflicts. People were getting wealthy investing in the Stock Market. When the economy crashed, people asked why? Some realized that the government had not regulated the economy and it just crashed in upon itself. There was too much inventory. Wages were not keeping up with the cost of living. People were going too much into debt. Banks were speculating with people's money. Why was there no regulation of these happenings? Why had the government not seen what was coming? What would the future hold?
