Before the industrial revolution, there was low certainty about food and livelihood. Many people were able to move to cities to work, earn a wage and buy food on a regular basis.
Prior to the Industrial Revoluation and throughout that time frame mortality was high. Disease, poor health, low or nil income (as there was very little work and no government finacial benefits to help) multiple families living in often very poor cramped accomodation (as many as 3 families in a house of 5 rooms), no medical support or help without payment, very poor sanitation where sewage was throw in to streets. These all effected peoples health and caused such things as plagues, flu style pan demicts etc - These had a knock on effect of killing may of the young and very old. Even in the 1843 to 1870 period industrialists were still trying to rely on child labour to run mills and mines because although there was work available the owner swere focused on profit margins and not care of the workers they employed
