Vikings rarely made bread, eating mainly meat, dairy products, fruits and vegetables. What little bread that was made consisted usually of barley and another grain, such as rye or wheat. There were no ovens for baking, and small biscuit like flatbreads were baked on a hot stone or pan. The climate made growing grain difficult, and much of the grain that was raised was used in making ale.
