What kind of clothing did the Powhatan Indians wear?

The Powhatan people generally wore very little clothing. Very young girls went naked, teenage girls wore only an apron-like deerskin garment with a fringed edge which left the buttocks and upper body bare; Pocahontas dressed like this. Older women sometimes wore a second apron at the back. Their breasts were normally exposed, but they sometimes wore a shoulder-fastened cloak of deerskin.

Both sexes went barefoot, but occasionally swamp-style moccasins were used.

Large, flat pieces of raccoon, otter, weasel, beaver and other skins were made into winter robes; important people wore robes of feathers.

The fantasy image of Pocahontas and her people created by Hollywood is completely false and should be ignored.

The Powhatan men wore leather loincloths in summer and fur robes during the winter. The women wore a deerskin apron and fur robes in the winter.
