Marco Polo was born and raised in Venice, first by his mother and then by his aunt and uncle after his mother died. PoloÕs father Niccolo had gone on a trading voyage just before Polo was born in 1254 and did not return until 1269. While with his aunt and uncle, Polo learned about subjects relating to the mercantile trade such as appraising, foreign currency and the handling of cargo ships.
