the settlers survived on the great plains pretty much the same as the indians, although they knew alot more about how to survive (how they did in the east). they eat buffalo's and any other animals they could find just like the red indians, but instead of tipis they built houses out of wood and other materials like they had back in the east, and they got around in wagons or rode on horseback. they also got water from the load of rivers around.
They did not live in houses. The Dakota people were plains dwellers and lived in tents and tepees which could be moved easily and quickly.
