In ancient China, most of buildings were designed the same way. The architecture was the same for the rich and complex palaces to small poor farmhouses. They are all bilateral and enclosure style. Bilateral architecture is keeping a balance or symmetry in the building. So when extending a house, that would mean adding the same thing from one side to the other. Enclosure architecture is when a house or building takes up all the property and has an open courtyard somewhere in the house, usually in the center.
