Maximilien Robespierre's death on July 28, 1794, was primarily a result of growing discontent with his dictatorial rule and the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution. As he intensified his campaign against perceived enemies, even within the revolutionary government, he alienated former allies and created widespread fear. Ultimately, this culminated in a backlash from the National Convention, leading to his arrest and execution by guillotine without trial, marking the end of the radical phase of the revolution.

Robespierre was a leader of "les montagnards", a hard-line group in the French assembly. "les montagnards" (the mountaineers) were named such because they occupied the upper seats in the assembly room.
After the King's execution, the influence of Robespierre, Danton, & the pragmatic politicians increased at the expense of the Girondists. Girondists refused to have anything more to do with Danton & because of this the government became more divided.
Two key events that led to the demise of Maximilien Robespierre were the growing discontent among his colleagues in the Committee of Public Safety and the shift in public opinion against the Reign of Terror. As Robespierre intensified his purges, even targeting former allies, fear and resentment mounted, culminating in the Thermidorian Reaction. On July 27, 1794, he was arrested by the National Convention, and the following day, he was executed without trial, marking the end of his influence and the Terror.
