Today, maybe someone with cell camera phones could capture the moments and put their photos and sounds on television; to counter government claims. But during the 1960's those things didn't exist (for the public), and you had to believe what the government told you.
It is a fact that NVN P4 Motor Torpedo Boats attacked the destroyer USS Maddox. Maddox had a hole in it from gunfire from those boats, and photographs exist showing NVN torpedo boats attacking & photos exist showing the Maddox's 5" shells exploding around them as they speed by. USN F-8 Crusaders (jets) attacked and also took photos.
It was a naval battle.
The second incident, on 04 August 1964 is as involved (complicated) as the "grassy knoll" is during Kennedy's assassination in '63. Father Time has seen to it, that these two dramas will forever be locked in controversy.
