What made the roman legionnaires so successful?

Roman soldiers were well-trained, well- disciplined, well- paid and well-armed. Roman generals also were very well educated in military tactics. In addition, Roman soldiers fought in groups of 100; each group had its own leader. If the Roman army lost a battle, the leaders of each group would line up their men and kill every tenth man. It is from this brutal but effective discipline that we get our word "decimate," to weaken or damage a group. So Roman soldiers had a strong incentive to do well!

In a nutshell, the Roman army had better leaders, better training , better weapons, which gave them confidence. They were also a professional army. This meant that they stayed in the army and trained for their enlistment period and were in general prepared for battle. Their enemies, on the other hand, would usually only fight for one battle and then disperse or fight for one fighting season and then go home. The Romans had the cohesion of a standing army while their enemies did not.

The Roman armies had discipline developed tactics that allowed them to out maneuver and overwhelm their enemies. They used their engineering skills to build siege engines to break down the walls of besieged cities. Romans developed weapons systems that were more advanced than any their enemies could employ (catapult's, crossbows, battering rams) and were able to equip and sustain their armies in the field through superior logistics and transportation. Most important, they learned from their opponents and incorporated improvements into their own tactical structure. Their main failure was a lack of truly strategic forethought, and how to best utilize and control their conquered territories.
