The first permanent European colony in North America was established in 1607 in what is now Virginia. This colony was named Jamestown and was founded by English settlers. It marked the beginning of the British colonization of North America.
In the Delaware colony, voting rights were primarily limited to white male property owners. This meant that many individuals, including women, enslaved people, and those without land, were excluded from the electoral process. While Delaware had a representative assembly and some democratic elements, its voting system was still restricted and heavily favored the interests of the wealthy landowning class, making it less democratic by modern standards. Overall, the colony had some democratic frameworks, but significant limitations on who could participate in governance.
Jamestown, established in 1607, laid the groundwork for modern democratic traditions in America, particularly through the establishment of the House of Burgesses in 1619, which was the first representative legislative assembly in the New World. This early form of self-government allowed settlers to make their own laws and set a precedent for representative democracy. Additionally, the emphasis on consent of the governed and the idea of elected representatives can be traced back to practices initiated in Jamestown, influencing the development of democratic principles in the broader context of American governance.

Samoset learned English from fishermen who wandered into his tribe's coastal territory. It is also possible that he had previously encountered fur-trading outposts, as this was the main export of the Americas at the time.[Note that regardless of how the Pilgrims were portrayed, the famed Plymouth Colony at Massachusetts Bay was not the first permanent English colony in the "New World" in fact, the first lasting colony was Jamestown Colony, founded in the year of 1607, located in modern-day Virginia.Even so, Jamestown was still not the first of the English colonies in the western hemisphere. There were multiple other colonization attempts prior to the successful Jamestown, including the mysterious lost colony of Roanoke.]
During the time of the 13 colonies, New Jersey had a mixed political landscape. Initially, it was established as a proprietary colony and later became a royal colony, allowing for some democratic elements, such as an elected assembly. However, voting rights were limited, primarily to landowners, which restricted broader democratic participation. Overall, while New Jersey had some democratic features, it was not fully democratic by modern standards.

The Virginia Company was a joint stock company chartered by King James I of England. The Virginia Company of London successfully established the territory of Jamestown, while the Virginia Company of Plymouth was to establish a colony further north. The Plymouth Company failed when their colony of Popham, in modern-day Maine, failed in 1608. Plymouth, Massachusetts was established by the religious separatists known as the Pilgrims after securing a land grant from Sir Edwin Sandys, a major stockholder in the failing Plymouth Company. So technically, the Virginia Company sponsored both the Jamestown and Plymouth colonies, but the latter was a bit more unofficial.
