Kyoto was not bombed by Allied forces during World War 2, despite being the home of Emperor Hirohito. The reason is that the US Secretary of War, Henry L. Stimson, had visited Kyoto on his honeymoon and was sentimental about the former capital of Japan.

Stimson's cousin had also studied Japanese and Chinese culture, and persuaded Stimson of the overall importance of keeping the city intact on account of its historical importance.
