Certainly yes. Our goal was to stop the spread of communism which the North Vietnamese(Communists) was going to or planning to invade the South Vietnamese. The South Vietnamese dressed the same as the Charlies(Vietcong) and north vietnamese though so it was a stressful time just to confirm who was who.
One source hinted at approximately 1 million northerners died during the war.
The main reasons for starting a War in Vietnam was simply because communism was spreading and countries such as America didn't want this to happen. North Vietnam was already communist and the Americans feared that over time it would spread into the south and other places such as Laos and Korea. This is known as the Domino Theory. This basically meant that if one country feel into communism, then the surrounding countries would eventually fall also. The Americans and Australians fought against the North Vietnamese troops along side the South Vietnamese troops.
Two countries? Over twenty countries were involved in the Korean War! The war was between South Korea and North Korea. The United States, Great Britain, and several other countries fought on the side of South Korea. The Soviet Union (now Russia) and China fought on the side of North Korea.
The US was on the SOUTH Vietnamese side. The enemy was the NORTH Vietnamese...two separate countries. The Southerners were non-communist; the Northerners were communists.
The nationalist South Vietnamese flag is yellow with three red striped going horizontally through the middle, from one side of the flag to the other. The communist North Vietnamese flag is red with a yellow star in the middle.

Canada was on the Allied side, with US, Australia, Britain and many other countries. Russia and China were the only countries that openly assisted North Korea.
Viet Congs were North Communists who fought against Americans/South Vietnamese Military (Democracy side).
Red China, North Korea, Cuba, and of course North Vietnam & for the other side, France, UK, Canada, etc.

It depends on who "we" refers to and how a person defines the "right" side. According to the current Vietnamese government, the United States fought on the wrong side of the Vietnam War. The Vietnamese government claims that South Vietnam was really a puppet state of the United States in its intent to colonize all of Vietnam and the North Vietnamese were helping the South achieve freedom, liberation, and unification. The United States narrative is that it was protecting the South Vietnamese people against North Vietnamese aggression, violent conquest, and the spread of communism, similar to how they had defended South Korea and Taiwan previously.
The southern side.
