Early in the century, the ostensibly 2,000-year-old imperial government of China was toppled by a nationalist movement. The political relationship between Great Britain and China was significantly damaged during the mid-nineteenth century due to the Opium Wars, particularly the First Opium War (1839-1842). The conflict arose from China's efforts to suppress the opium trade, which Britain was heavily involved in, leading to military confrontations. The resulting Treaty of Nanking not only ceded Hong Kong to Britain but also opened several ports to British trade, fostering resentment and mistrust in China towards British imperialism and intervention. This period marked a decline in China's sovereignty and a shift in its relationship with Western powers.
