James II renamed New Amsterdam to New York in 1664 in honor of the Duke of York, who was his brother. The change reflected the English takeover of the territory from the Dutch, symbolizing the shift in power and control over the colony. The new name also aimed to solidify English influence and governance in the region.
Simply they were out numbered by the Duke of York and by the English neighbors in New England and Long Island. The colonial neighbors came on to Dutch lands and ignored agreements. When King Charles sent a squadron in 1664 it was too much and Stuyvesant surrendered without a shot. Here is an interesting little fact Stuyvesant will return home to defend his decision to surrender and then went back to New York where he lived on his farm until his death.
New Amsterdam was founded for the Dutch West India Company for the sole purpose of profit (through trade). The colony of New Amsterdam was founded by the Dutch West India Company, hoping to find as much profit as the Dutch East India Company did in the spice trade. The only trade item developed by the colony was furs from the Native Americans. The company blundered in, developing the colony for settlers so that population growth was very slow, resulting in little production of agricultural products or manufactured goods that could be shipped back to Holland. It was almost a mercy to have the place stolen away by the British after several decades of mismanagement.
New York was a British colony because it was under British rule until it was admitted to the Union on July 26,1788. The state was named after the Duke of York who went on to became King James II of England.
James, Duke of York, granted land to the English settlers in the territory he received from the Dutch, which he renamed New York. He specifically gave control of the area to his friends and allies, including Sir George Carteret and Lord John Berkeley, who established the colony of New Jersey. This distribution of land was part of his efforts to solidify English control over the region following the capture of New Amsterdam in 1664.
The people of New Amsterdam want the governor to give in to the English because of the land. But in 1664 they were at peace but shortly after the second Anglo Dutch War start in June of 1655.
It was. The first Europeans to settle in New York City were the Dutch, in either 1624, 1625, or 1626 (different sources give different dates). They named it New Amsterdam. When the English took control in 1664, they renamed it New York.

Tulips from Amsterdam sung by Max Bygraves When it's Spring again I'll bring again Tulips from Amsterdam With a heart that's true I'll give to you Tulips from Amsterdam I can't wait until the day you fill These eager arms of mine Like the windmill keeps on turning That's how my heart keeps on yearning For the day I know we can share these Tulips from Amsterdam

The English did not so much take New York from the dutch, they convinced them to a trade of territory. I do now know the exact details of the deal, but I know Surinam was controlled by the English at that point in time, and power of this territory was transferred to the dutch in exchange for New York, there might have been a lot more to the deal, but this is what I know. your a stupid tard they where forced bye sacahgaweha

Sleep well is an English equivalent of 'Welterusten'. The word in Dutch is in the imperative form, as a command. But it's a kindly greeting to give someone.
