Europeans set sail for the New World because of a desire to create a better life for themselves. There were stories of more land being available in the Americas and there were more opportunities for advancement.

Well Europeans came to America thinking no one had discovered that there was land there and that there were no inhabitants, but the Native Americans were here. So in discovering that there were people there, the Europeans tried to take their land from them by killing them. But there were ultimately too many to kill all of them, so they assigned them to reservations, and sold all their land to European settlers. So now there aren't very many Native Americans left due to the settlers greed :)
Some of the reasons Europeans actively engaged in exploration included the need to find new land and new raw materials. Exploration greatly paved the way for many trade opportunities.
One result of the loss of Native American lives to disease is that the Native Americans moved farther away from the Europeans. Another result of disease among the Native Americans was their lack of people to fight the Europeans for land.
