General Cornwallis chose to stay at Yorktown primarily because he believed it was a strategically advantageous location, offering a strong defensive position along the coast and access to supplies. He hoped to receive reinforcements and support from British naval forces, which he believed would enable him to withstand the siege. Additionally, Cornwallis aimed to maintain British control in the southern colonies and was committed to defending his troops against the encroaching American and French forces. Ultimately, his decision was driven by a mix of tactical considerations and a desire to uphold British authority in the region.

What is one of the reasons that Cornwallis will have to surrender at Yorktown?

One key reason Cornwallis was forced to surrender at Yorktown is the effective blockade and siege executed by the combined American and French forces. General Washington's troops, along with French reinforcements under General Rochambeau, surrounded Cornwallis's army, cutting off their escape routes and supplies. Additionally, the French naval victory at the Battle of the Chesapeake prevented British reinforcements from reaching Cornwallis, further sealing his fate. This strategic encirclement and isolation ultimately compelled Cornwallis to surrender in October 1781.

Where did the american war for independence take place?

The American war of Independence started in 1775 and ended in 1783.The American War of Independence took place all across the Thirteen Colonies which form the eastern seaboard of the United States. The major campaigns of the War were in New York State, eastern New England, Virginia, and the Carolinas, but there were battles in other areas.Additionally, allies of the future United States (specifically France, Spain, and the Netherlands, but not Prussia and Poland) used the British preoccupation with the North American mainland to target much more desirable and wealthier British colonies in India and the West Indies. These secondary wars drew away many British soldiers who could otherwise have been deployed in the United States and were one of the main reasons that British General Cornwallis was allowed to surrender at Yorktown, Virginia.

Why was the battle of Yorktown so important?

it was important because it gave freedom and independence to the americans. Obviously, but there is more to it than that. It was the beginning of something crucial to what everything is now. Because of the events leading up to the battle at Yorktown, we managed to defeat our opposser and get our hands on what we've wanted this whole time; freedom and independence. But not only to the American's did the spoils go. Many people openly benefited from this exchange, such as the French. Because they stuck with the Americans during the hardships of the battle at Trenton, and generously gave them the idea to cut down bridges and tree's in hopes to "corner" them, they got themselves respectable allies and made the turning point in the Revolutionary war possible. During the Battle @ Yorktown, the patriots traveled over 200 miles in fifteen day's. They met General Cornwallis and the British troops in Virginia. Three sets of troops were used to close in on the redcoats. The British were confused, low on supplies, and many were sick. The Americans trapped Cornwallis on the peninsula, which meant they were cornered on three sides by water and another by angry Patriots, with no where to go. This also was mainly due to the French fleet that arrived six hours before the British fleet, blocking their only escape route at the time. Cornwallis surrender's, and, tada, the war is over. The U.S.A gained the Treaty of Paris, land from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River and from Canada to Florida. A part from this, the Redcoats were forced to leave.
