Paul Revere's most well-known achievement during the American Revolution was his midnight ride from Boston to Lexington, during which he and William Dawes were instructed by Dr. Joseph Warren to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams about the British army's advancement. Paul Revere was sent across the Charles River before he began his ride, while William Dawes took the longer land route via the Boston Neck.

Revere had Robert Newman, a sexton of the Old North Church, promise to light lanterns in the steeple to warn the colonists of Charlestown of the British army's intentions once the information was known. He wanted to make sure that even if he and Dawes were captured, the information would get through to the people it was intended for. The code was simple--one lantern if the British chose a land route and two lanterns if they advanced across the river.

Revere also warned many patriots along his route and had them spread the word as well. This was more insurance against the stifling of this information. Sources indicate that there were as many as 40 individuals spreading the word of the British army's advancement by the time Revere reached Lexington. Eventually they were joined by Samuel Prescott on the way to Concord, where the rebellion's arms were hidden.

Although many people believe that he rode through the streets shouting, "The British are coming!" (courtesy of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who wrote the poem "Paul Revere's Ride"), eyewitness accounts reported that his actual warning was, "The Regulars are coming out." The reason for this was that secrecy during this mission was of the utmost importance.

This warning allowed the American militia to prepare for and repel the British at Concord, effectively driving them back to Boston. Revere also assisted John Hancock and his family in their escape from Lexington with important papers the British were after.
