In the time of The Revolutionary War armies had different traditions than they do today. One of the major differences was that, often, women would accompany their husbands and boyfriends off to battle. They performed needed services in all forms. They worked as nurses, ladies of the night, caregivers, cooks, seamstresses, butchers, and laundresses. They would just as often have their children along to help with the daily needs of camp life. There are numerous reports of women even getting involved in the fighting itself, though the concept at the time was frowned upon.

Off the battlefield some women worked as spies and couriers and, as such, were vital in the distribution of news and vital information. In many ways women were just as important as the men at the time because they kept the army clothed, fed, and as healthy as possible.
