Officially, Russia was not involved.

However, Russian military advisers were stationed with and supervising the initial invading North Korean forces. In addition, Russia had been training the North Korean leadership in secret since 1943, to create a Stalinist puppet regime in the anticipated unified Korean peninsula after the Japanese defeat by America.

When MacArthur successfully invaded at Inchon, cutting off the North Koreans deep in South Korea, Russia got its people out of there as fast as possible.

Stalin had not expected America to get involved militarily, since there were a mere 500 or so US soldiers stationed in South Korea in 1950, when he encouraged North Korea to militarily reunify the Korean peninsula.

When China realized that North Korea was facing defeat after the Russian pullout, the Communist leadership joined in, sending millions of troops to fight the hated Americans, and UN forces in Korea.
