What social problems helped cause the empires decline?

The decline of the Roman Empire was caused by military and economic factors, rather than social problems. It was caused by the Crisis of the Third Century, a fifty-year period of military anarchy. Military commanders were proclaimed emperors by their own troops. These were challenged by other military commanders hailed emperors by their own troops. There was a lot of infighting. Many emperors were murdered, sometimes by their troops which had elevated them as emperors because they did not want to fight a civil war. There were also several usurper emperors. Two parts of the empire broke away until Aurelian reunited the empire. In addition to this there were invasions into the eastern part of the empire by the Goths and Heruli and raids into the western part by the Franks and Alemanni. The Roman army managed to fend these off, but it became overstretched. All this fighting exacted a heavy toll on the economy, especially in the frontier provinces of the empire.
In addition to the devastation of war, there was the problem of hyperinflation, which had been caused by repeated debasement of the Roman coins to fund the military and war. The precious metal content of the gold and silver coins was repeatedly decreased until this content became minimal. The coins became worthless and this led to hyperinflation, which crippled the economy of the empire.
The social problems of this period were the product of the military and economic factors which led to the decline of the empire, rather than a cause. It has to be noted that after this period of instability and decline, the Roman Empire both stabilised politically and recovered economically, even though economically it did not do so fully.
