During the Renaissance, there was a shift in social values towards emphasizing individual achievement and secular interests. Nothing 'contributed' to anything, just that before the Renaissance nobody was much bothered about art, literature and that kind of thing. The correct question to ask would be 'what contributed to the art and learning in the Renaissance', but I'm not gonna answer that.
