France was the American revolutionaries major ally against Britain. France signed formal treaties with the American Colonies in 1778, known as the Treaty of Amity and Commerce and the Treaty of Alliance. With this signing they formally recognized the U.S. as an independent nation but they had been secretly aiding the colonists since 1776. Angry with Great Britain over its loss of colonial territory in the French and Indian War, France was very receptive to appeals from diplomat Benjamin Franklin, who traveled to the country seeking a formal alliance. During the Revolution, the French sent approximately 12,000 soldiers and 32,000 sailors to fight with the Americans as well as supplying our fledgling nation with arms and loans.
