Virginia with more than a 100 or maybe more than 200 battles! It was the home to a lot of Civil War battles because of it's place. It is right between the North and South (Union and Confederacy) therefore is an easy battle area. The first battle, the battle of Bull Run, was fought in Virginia, although, the last battle was not. Virginia had seceded from the Union later than most states, mainly because there were a lot of debating. Virginia (or rather the confederacy) was home to a lot of famous generals such as Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and Robert E. Lee.
In addition, the fact that each sides capitol city was a mere 100 miles apart seemed to accentuate the need for conflicts in order to place pressure on each side of the war.

∙ 10y agoThe Major battles of the civil war were fought in Virginia, Tennessee, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Kentucky, Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina.
Minor battles took place in Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, Arkansas, Florida, Alabama, North Carolina, Arizona, New Mexico & the Indian Territory (Oklahoma) territories.
Furthermore Ohio, Indiana, Illinois had been concerned by some Confederate cavalry raids.

Virginia was the site of most US Civil War battles. Among the best known are these, but not all inclusive are:
The two Bull Runs, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Siege of Petersburg, Cold Harbor, Mechanicsville, Drewry's Bluff, Seven Pines, Hampton Roads, and Spotsylvania .
In total more then 120, battles took place in Virginia.
Tennessee and Georgia also saw many battles. Tennessee was involved very early, while Georgia battles came later.
