The 13 original states were part of the British Empire until independence. Their territory included the present-day states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, most of Alabama and Mississippi, and portions of Minnesota and Louisiana.

Britain also claimed the Oregon Country (or the Columbia district), including the present-day states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, plus part of Montana, and a chunk of present-day Canada. The Oregon Country was divided between the US and Britain (later Canada) in the Oregon Treaty of 1846.
