Delaware was the first state to join the Union, followed by Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut. All five of these states were part of the original 13 colonies and ratified the U.S. Constitution in the late 18th century.
The states that DID NOT secede from the Union was Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri. These four states did not secede from the Union because They were Border states, meaning they were between the Union and the Confederacy.
Alabama was among the first seven states to secede from the Union and was the home of the first Confederate capital which was at Montgomery.
Delaware was the first US State and Pennsylvania became the second five days later. Only three States joined in 1787 with New Jersey as number three. By the end of 1788 there were only eleven US States.

The Confederates succeded primarly because of Lincoln being elected. The South didn't agree with Lincoln's opinions and pretty much as soon as he was elected they succeded.
The formed the Confederate States of America, which fought the rest of the Union, and looked like winning for a time, in the summer of 1862, and again in 1864 when everyone thought Lincoln would be voted out in the election.
