The Battle of Stalingrad occured between August 23, 1942 through February 2, 1943 in Stalingrad, Russia. During the battle, the Nazis were defeated by the Solviets after a little more than 5 months.
The "main" reason 6th Army was defeated in Stalingrad was due to a MAJOR soviet counter offensive well to the north and south of Stalingrad which broke through the Romanian, Hungarian, Italian and possibly Spain's blue division forces holding those positions and then "encircling" 6th army in Stalingrad. Once surrounded, they were basically cut off from reinforcements and supplies, with their ammunition exhausted 6th army fought valiantly but defeat soon followed. An break out was ordered with Erich von Mansteinstien heading the assault but he got bogged down and could not break through… 30 miles short of Stalingrad. 6th army's fate was sealed.
The city once called Stalingrad was originally called Tsaritsin (from 1598 until 1925). In 1925 it was renamed Stalingrad after Josef Stalin successfully defended it in 1918 during the Russian civil war (or revolution) In 1961 , after Stalin had fallen from grace, it was renamed again, this time as Volgograd after the river which flows through the city. It still has that name.
The 1945 defeat of the Third Reich came due from multiple factors. The primary and fatal mistake of the Germans were repeating Napoleon's gamble by invading the Russian motherland. The Germans could not effectively supply such a wide line, and the ensuing Russian winter crushed them. The opening of the Western and North African Fronts through Allied Invasions, specifically the entrance of the United States in the War proved the second blow. The Soviet encirclement of the German 6th Army under Paulus at Stalingrad was another strategic event lending to defeat.
