US President "Teddy" Roosevelt helped end the Russo-Japanese War ( 1904-05). He led peace treaty negotiations in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, thus the treaty is called the Treaty of Portsmouth. For his efforts, Roosevelt won the Nobel Peace Prize. As an aside, it should be noted that in 1905 and earlier, Japanese Navy officers were receiving training at the US Naval Academy. This was significant then and also, sadly in the future.
