Sadly, for an educated man, Louis Agassiz believed in ideas that we today would consider racist. He firmly believed that Africans (and American blacks as well) were born inferior to whites, and that science could support white supremacy. He also wrote "scholarly" articles about the innate superiority of the white race. In fairness, his views were common for that era (1850-1890), but that doesn't make them any easier to read today. I enclose a link to an interesting essay that shows some examples of Professor Agassiz's theories.
South Carolina had the most slaves. 57% of the population of the state were slaves

African Slaves
South Carolina had so many slaves that there were more African slaves than Caucasian citizens. Because of its role in the business of slavery, South Carolina had a lot of authority in Southern policy-making in the eighteenth century.
West Africa
Perhaps the best known study concerning the racial aspects of Southern slaves was done by Louis Agassiz of Harvard University in 1850. As part of his study, he traveled to South Carolina and had photographs taken of both male and female slaves.

Slaves arrived in South Carolina through various means, including being transported on ships from West Africa as part of the transatlantic slave trade. They were also sometimes brought in from other American colonies or purchased from slave markets. Additionally, some slaves were born into slavery in South Carolina.
