The Romans built infrastructure, a network of roads throughout their empire totalled the 400,000 kilometres (250,000 miles), 20% (80,500 km, 50,313 miles) of which were the famous stone paved roads, some 70 aqueducts, ports, dams, sewers and hundred of bridges They built amphitheaters, theatres, temples, bathhouses, basilicas (public buildings) and erected monuments. Much of this was built by the state. Wealthy aristocrats in the towns also built infrastructure, building for public purposes and monuments to embellish their towns. Rich peoples built sumptuous villas for themselves in towns, seaside resort and in the countryside (the latter usually were the farmsteads of large landed estates).
