The Americans had many advantages over the British in the revolution, some made by mistakes made by the British. One major advantage the Americans had was the will to fight. The former colonies were much more willing to continue the war, were the British wanted to end the war as quickly as possible, as there was already a large national debt due to previous wars. The British also made the mistake of valuing cities and other strategic areas over finding and destroying the actual American Army. The Americans were allowed to retreat from defeated defensive positions and fight another day, so to speak. Also, by utilizing guerrilla tactics they learned when fighting the Indians in the French and Indian War, the Americans were able to attack British supply lines, and avoid major conflicts with the bulk of the British Army. Using these advantages, and the arrival of major French aid, the Americans were able to win their freedom.
