The three countries that challenged Spain and Portugal during the Age of Exploration were England, France, and the Netherlands. These nations sought to expand their own empires and engage in trade, particularly in the Americas and Asia. Their competition led to conflicts and rivalries, as they aimed to undermine the Iberian powers' dominance in global trade routes and colonial territories. This competition eventually contributed to the decline of Spanish and Portuguese hegemony in the 17th century.
Portugal and Spain
The Iberian peninsula has three countries: Portugal (Parliamentary republic), Spain (Constitutional Monarchy) and Andorra (Parliamentary democracy and Co-principality)
The Portuguese and the Spanish were in competition during the period of colonization in the 15th century, following their reconquest from the Moors. Portugal pioneered the sea route to India around Africa, and Spain discovered the Americas. The Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) effectively limited Portugal to colonies in Brazil, where its influence remains today. In the early 1800s, Napoleon led French armies that occupied Spain, and part of Portugal, making the two countries erstwhile allies.
All three countries are republics and members of the European Community and use the euro as currency .
