The second blitz, often referred to as the "Blitz," began on September 7, 1940, when the German Luftwaffe launched an extensive bombing campaign against London and other British cities. The attacks typically took place at night, with bombers targeting urban areas after dark to maximize damage and instill fear. The bombing raids varied in timing, but many began in the evening and continued into the early hours of the morning.
were the bombing attacks of the blitz done during the day or night
The blitz mainly happened at night so the British could not see the planes and rocket bombs coming.
The first day of the Blitz, which began on September 7, 1940, is often referred to as "Black Saturday." This day marked the start of intense German bombing raids over London and other British cities, aiming to weaken British morale and disrupt the war effort. The name reflects the devastation and chaos that ensued, as the Luftwaffe launched a sustained aerial assault that would continue for months.
Round about where the battery park was because there was an amunition factory and also the shipyards which was one of the most important in Britain at tyhe time. I am also not sure but the Faz lane naval base may have been there at the time and that is just acros the water from greenock so it is possible that the Germans were actually aiming for there but missed. When I was researching this recently, I came across a good local history site, it's on the GREENOCK BLITZ. Great, very thorough. It shows photographs fom the blitz and then beside it, is a modern day shot, so you're able to understand where the war time location will be today. There's also stuff about the blitz raids and a list of all the casualties and everything.
