The first skill taught was marching, roman recruits had to march 20 miles every morning, sunny, raining or snowing, with at least 30kg of equipment in less than 5 hours, this was made so the marching legion wasn't vulnerable to attack due to some soldiers getting behind.
The second skill was the sword, Romans practiced with wooden swords and shields twice as heavy as the real ones against a wooden stake, the recruit had to be fast and accurate with the sword before moving to the next stage which was 1 vs 1 fighting with wooden replicas, but this time the replicas had the same weight as the normal equipment.
The next stage was the pila (javelin), recruits practiced with replicas twice as heavy.
After that they had to master the abilities of swimming and horse riding, this ones were taught by repetition.

A good combat video for training soldiers is Go Army. It enables a civilian to be a soldier in ten weeks. Civilians can get Basic Combat Training (BCT). One can also watch some Youtube videos about this.
