The Pilgrims settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620, establishing one of the first successful European colonies in North America. He settled at the tip of Narragansett Bay, on land granted to him by the Narragansett tribe. He called this site 'Providence' and declared it a place of religious freedom. Opponents of religious freedom sometimes referred to it as 'Rogue's Island' which later came to be Rhode Island. Due to the island's tolerance, the oldest surviving synagogue in North America, the Touro Synagogue was built and remains there.
