In respect to the Civil War that was a seminal event in American History, the two rivers that served as highways of prime importance to Northern and Southern armies in the Western Theater (in the first half of the war) were the Mississippi and Tennessee. In the war's first two years, numerous conflicts were waged along these important rivers, with the final victory going to the North with the epic battle at Vicksburg that ended in July 1863.
