Roman houses depended on the wealth of the person. The very rich had villas that were built in the shape of a square with a fountain in the center. All the rooms opened to the center court. When a visitor came there was a entrance hall where they were received and branching off from each side was other rooms. A kitchen would have been in the back in case of fire and behind that area would have been slave quarters that were small cells. Often these houses were brightly painted with pictures on the walls and mosaics on the floors. The poor of Roman society didn't live so well. In the city of Rome there were multistory apartment houses that were so close that if a fire started it would jump from room to room. The roof was made of wood and covered with a matting. It was a dirty noisy type of living.
