"Flathead" was the name applied to the Interior Salish tribes by their coastal relatives, who deformed the skulls of their own children to produce "pointed" heads.
The Interior Salish and the related Kootenai, Spokane and Kalispel tribes lived for much of the year in semi-underground pit lodges. These consisted of a large pit about 3 or 4 feet deep, roofed over with branches, woven mats and dry grass thatch; each lodge was large enough for 4 or 5 families totalling about 30 people.
For summer hunting, smaller lodges with log frames and matting or planks as a covering were made, but some Flatheads adopted a small version of the Plains tipi for use when hunting.
