In the 1745 rebellion, Jacobites carried firelock muskets (mostly of French origin), their swords (claymores) and targe shields. Many also carried fowling pistols. Their primary tactic, the Highland Charge, was to run at the enemy line and fire muskets from about six feet away, then crash into the foe's ranks and attack with swords or daggers.

Not all soldiers had rifles or swords, some carried makeshift polearms, Lochabar axes, etc. Nearly everyone carried a dagger or knife. The Jacobite army also had about a half dozen cannons, but these were not effective anti-personnel weapons.

The British/Hanoverian force at Culloden was armed with Brown Bess muskets, bayonets, and cannons that fired ball and grapeshot.
