The provocator (challenger) was the most heavily armoured gladiator
and only fought with another provocator.
He was the only gladiator with a protection for the trunk: a breastplate. Therefore, he lacked the honour to show a bare chest which was seen as defiance of death. His armament mirrored that of the legion. He had a gladio,
, used the scutum and his armour was like that of a legionary.
The types of gladiators who fought with a sword and a shield were the hoplomachus, the murmillo, the thraex (Thracian) and the secutor.
A Gladiator used a variety of weapons and usually were paired with the different types of combatants. one such example is the trident and neat combo. other weapons were more devious, such as the ceca : with it's angled blade it could be used to strike from otherwise impossible angles.
There were four.
they used a lot of different weapons, for example sword, knife, net, shield and spear. :)
When the gladiators wern't fighting they would practice at the ampitheatre or be at their quarters. Gladiators wenrnt often completely killed as they were hard to replace and provided a great source of entertainment. When the crowd wanted a gladiator to be completely killed the kind would have to rule the decision.

Only one of 16 different types of gladiators wore armour. This was the provocator (challenger) who wore a breastplate and whose armament was similar to that of a Roman soldiers. All other types of gladiators fought bare chested. This was a symbol of defiance against death.
There were thraexes, retiarius or net men, provocator and hoplomachuses.
