America' weakness when the Revolution began was military. The Americans had no navy whatsoever, while the British had the most powerful navy in the world. The British had a small but very professional army, and the Americans had only a loose conglomeration of militia units, more used to guarding against Indian raids. They had no army trained to fight another army on a battlefield, European style. The Americans had few guns, fewer cannon, and no factories which could make these crucial items.
