The main Prime Minister and driving force during World War II was Winston Churchill. However, when war was declared in September 1939, Neville Chamberlain was Prime Minister. He was replaced by Winston Churchill in May 1940 and in the election of 1945, just before the European war ended, he was unbelievably beaten at the polls by his deputy, Clement Attlee.

Not counting Margaret Thatcher, who had a husband, not a wife. Sir Edward Heath was the last British Prime Minister who didn't have a wife. Heath's term as Prime Minister was from, June 19, 1970 - March 4, 1974. He was one of only four British Prime Ministers never to have married.

The current Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is not among the options listed. As of my last knowledge update in October 2023, Rishi Sunak is the Prime Minister. Gordon Brown, Margaret Thatcher, and Winston Churchill are former Prime Ministers, and Queen Elizabeth II was the monarch until her death in September 2022.

More than one British Prime Minister did not have a wife. Four were never married. They were Ted Heath, Spencer Compton, William Pitt (the younger) and Arthur Balfour. A number of British Prime ministers were widowers during their term of office. Margaret Thatcher obviously did not have a wife.
