Dorothy Irene Height [b. March 24, 1912] wanted to see civil rights respected for Americans of African descent. She particularly wanted women in the African American community to be able to take advantage of their Constitutional rights. For example, she was a strong believer in equal access to education. From her own experience, she knew what it was like to want an education and to be denied the access.
Specifically, Height had been awarded a scholarship to Barnard College in New York City. But neither her enrollment nor her scholarship was honored when she expected to begin her studies. At the time, Barnard only admitted two students of African American descent each year. Two such students had gotten through registration before Height, who thereby saw her registration stopped short and her admission rejected. She ended up being accepted by New York University, and receiving an apology from Barnard.
